20 Jul The Star of the Team is the Team
Whenever I see a racing pit stop crew in action refueling the car, changing tires and cleaning the windshield, I often think back to my time as the Coordinator of Basketball Operations at Marquette University. What does a college basketball program have in common with a pit crew? To function as a successful team, both must value role diversity.
A pit crew consists of tire changers, tire carriers, a jack man, a gas man, a catch can man, a window tear off, tire catchers, a spotter, a crew chief, a technologist and a meteorologist. A college basketball program is comprised of assistant coaches, a director of basketball operations, a video coordinator, a head coach, an assistant to the head coach, managers and graduation assistants.
In 2006, our head coach, Tom Crean, put up a huge banner in our practice facility at the Al McGuire Center that read, “THE STAR OF THE TEAM IS THE TEAM.” What does this mean for your organization?
If you can establish an environment where every single person feels that they are an integral part of the team and have a chance to contribute, you’ve created a situation where people feel motivated and able to do great things. When people feel empowered and appreciated, that’s where the magic happens! Every human being has value, and every player on a team adds value to the team in some way. Celebrate and capitalize on what each individual brings to the table.
Wayne Dyer said it best: “Your life is like a play with several acts. Some of the characters who enter have short roles to play, others, much larger. Some are villains and others are good guys. But all of them are necessary; otherwise, they wouldn’t be in the play. Embrace them all, and move on to the next act.”
REFLECTION: How can you establish an environment where every single person in your organization feels that they are an integral part of the team?
