WHAT IS YOUR OTHERS-FOCUSED PLAN?

Don’t be the type of leader who constantly talks about themselves.

I’m continually impressed by people who try to make it a habit of always making it about others. The people who are impressed with others and interested in others vs. trying to be the impressive and interesting person.

Several years ago I was at a celebration marking the 100th anniversary of Marquette men’s basketball. It was a massive event filled with huge names from the Marquette organization — previous coaches, staff and players.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw former NBA player, Jim McIlvaine, holding a large poster and having all of these amazing players and coaches sign it. He came up to me and asked me to sign the poster.

I was taken aback. I was one of the lowest people on the totem pole at Marquette University, so I was confused why he wanted MY signature.

He said to me, “Yeah, you. You were a big part of Marquette men’s basketball, too.”

Jim McIlvaine knows how to make it all about others.

Be more like Jim.
